Indicator: Species Presence

Status

Available on Project Basis

Description

Shows the number of individual species of interest (plants, animals, insects) observed in a given polygon and the surrounding region using publicly available species observation databases. The indicator can be localized by adding in-situ species detections, for example from camera traps, acoustics or ecological surveys.

Unit

Number/count (total observations and species count)

Temporal Resolution

Flexible time range depending on data availability. Typically, we report observations from previous 3 years.

Spatial Resolution

Point data, aggregated at 10, 15, and 25 km radii.

Data

GBIF species occurrence records with parameters including coordinates, occurrence status, year range, and basis of record

Method

We retrieve species occurrence records from GBIF and processes data to calculate total observations and curate an overview in terms of identifying rare or threatened species, invasive species etc.
