Indicator: Forest Canopy & Height Cover
Status
Available on Project Basis
Description
Canopy height measures the height of woody vegetation from ground to canopy top in meter increments. Canopy cover quantifies the percentage of area occupied by trees (defined as vegetation ≥5m tall) within each pixel
Unit
Canopy Height: meters
Canopy Cover: percentage
Temporal Resolution
Annual, with data available since 2013
Spatial Resolution
30 meters
Data
Planet forest diligence product, which is based on:
Airborne and spaceborne LiDAR data
Surface reflectance data from Landsat and Sentinel-2
L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar mosaics from ALOS-PALSAR-2
Method
Planet forest diligence product methodology: Uses U-Net image regression models to predict canopy height and cover, followed by Light gradient boosting-machine regression models to predict aboveground carbon based on the predicted height, cover, and elevation data. The model converts biomass to carbon using a global mean carbon concentration of 0.476.
